Over the Weekend of 8th-10th January 19 Explorers from Southdown District defied the weather conditions and made it to Gilwell Winter Camp for a weekend of activities, fun and maybe even a little bit of snow! Here’s What Will and Caitlin had to say about this years Winter Camp…
Will “Winter Camp was this massive event with scouts from all around the country and even some from France. Just in that small area around the camp square there was three types of climbing, abseiling, robowars, brushboarding and a full funfair. On Friday Night it was down to the disco for the evening! It was nice being in a heated carpeted hall dancing to the massive speakers! The first night we knew it was going to be chilly as it already was chilly! I had to wear more clothes then I was wearing in the day, As well as two sleeping bags!
Saturday was all about going out and trying all of those activities; I went on everything I could! As well as the things I said before, there were; quad bikes, 3G swing, laser tag, flying disk shooting, another climbing wall, and loads more, my favourite was brushboarding (a slope of spinning brushes that you surf on) and all the climbing walls. When not doing activities we were getting a fire going for the evening, with trips back and forth to the woodpile it was one way of keeping warm!
Sunday, I didn’t have to wake up early to cook breakfast, but for some reason I did anyway (might have been to do with 5live interviewing us)! After Breakfast I went on the last of the activities and after a few snowball fights that was that! What a week end ehh?!”
Caitlin: “Winter Camp was extremely cold which was to be expected as it had been snowing days before camp, honestly I didn’t think it was going to go ahead, but I’m very glad it did.
The best part of the weekend was the activities and I took part in many, my favourite was quad biking as I had never done it before and managed to get the hang of it quite quickly. I also enjoyed the ski simulator as the effects were reasonably good and it felt like a rollercoaster ride, it was pretty amazing!! I had a great laugh on all of the activities with my friends and I found it fun exploring all the different activities and finding my way round, as the site was huge. There was an awesome disco at the end of the night and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and having fun.
I thought that it was an amazing weekend and would definitely go again!”
Some of you may have spotted these two on BBC News on the Saturday, being interviewed live for the top of the hour news and then being replayed throughout the day!
Winter Camp may not be the warmest camp, but it is unparalleled by any other activity camp – combining the weather, activities and 2,500 people to meet and have fun with!
