Update from the County Commissioner
October 2011
It was encouraging to see that after our mid-term census that we
have made a significant increase taking our figures over the 11,000
mark. Everyone should once again be congratulated on a magnificent
effort. It is disappointing though to find that some groups took it
on themselves not to submit their census figures. These actions
must be addressed next year as we must have 100% participation, no
excuses.
We are still progressing with our development programme and have
funds available to support groups with the improvements to their
headquarters, you only have to submit a worthwhile project and then
get it approved for possibly some financial assistance...it's that
easy! Can I also remind you of the new section and Group start up
funding which is available when opening new sections, all you need
to do is apply!
Reducing the joining list and recruiting more adults remains a
key focus. I encourage all leaders to talk to their Want to Join
Coordinator and fill any spaces within their section. So many
children are missing out on the opportunity to Scout, so please
find space wherever you can.
Two District Commissioners; Vicky Hennessey (Bognor Regis) and
Vicki Tabrah (Adur Valley) will be stepping down next year, it is
my intention to start a search group to find their successors in
the next month or two. So please get your thinking caps on as to
who you would like to nominate or could you be up to the
challenge?
A search group to find the successor for Brian Barker (DC,
Horsham Weald) has now been formed and details of the nomination
process will be out later this month.
I have been to at least five AGMs in the last couple of weeks
and at each of them we were entertained by some of our Jamboree
Unit members and on all occasions they provided a great
presentation. Well done to you all. Recently at Worthing's District
AGM I was presented with a cake: a very nice gesture, my thanks to
you all.
I know many of you have been celebrating the 25th anniversary of
Beaver Scouting and I look forward to joining many of you and
thousands of Beavers and their leaders at Legoland Windsor on the
weekend of the 8th/9th October. Do say hello if you see me.
The County continues to provide events for all sections,
recently Sussex 24 for Explorers and an Activity Day for Scouts
were held. These were two very successful events so watch out for
them next year! Also in the diary for next year is County Cub Camp
which is being held at the South of England Showground, Ardingly.
The theme is Pirates and the team have lots of exciting activities
plans, an event not to be missed!
Have fun!
John
