Message from Vernon C Cowdell - County Adviser (First Aid)
21-22 January 2012
We are all aware that as part of our training, and appointment
review, all Leaders are required to have, as a minimum, a basic
knowledge in First aid
This is achieved by attending a First Response (Module 10) course
and its three yearly requalification course. However this level of
knowledge is considered to be insufficient where Leaders are
undertaking activities in what is referred to as Terrain 2 (over
800 metres, more than 3 hours from help or where there is an
element of scrambling involved)
To achieve this level of qualification Leaders would, in the past,
have had to attend an appropriate course provided by one of the
many external training organizations.
Across the Country the Scout Association, in conjunction with the
British Red Cross, have developed arrangements whereby this higher
level of qualification can be provided "in house".
Within West Sussex this course is available to those Leaders who
undertake activities in Terrain 2 areas and need the qualification
rather than to those who feel it would be nice to have.
The first such course in West Sussex took place over the weekend of
21/22 January 2012 at St Leonards Forest Scout HQ in Horsham.

11 adults from across the County successfully completed the course
during which, in addition to refreshing their existing knowledge in
First Aid, they had to deal with realistically enacted, practical,
scenarios
Unlike First Response courses which are held on predetermined days
within Districts the BRCS Practical First Aid course is only run
subject to demand.
Adults who need the higher level of First Aid qualification should
let me have their details through their District Commissioner in
the first instance.
