WEST SUSSEX SCOUTS
 “UP UP and AWAY”

November 2008
To All Leaders in WEST SUSSEX
INTRODUCTION

As we near the end of 2008 …….. we can reflect on another busy year of Scouting in West Sussex , a number of young people have taken part in various different events / expeditions  involving international activities and into 2009 we strive to get even more people abroad.

One good way of   introducing people to the idea of international is to read of the exploits and successes of others, if you have had an international experience this year, we the international team would really like to get some feed back from you. Ideally if you have been involved in an international Camp or gone abroad then a report and photos would be great …..

But as mentioned before international doesn’t mead having to go aboard , if you have had success in your unit meetings on an international theme tell us about , Scouting is about sharing ideas and your idea may be just the idea a colleague  might be looking for.
Let’s support others by championing our successes both aboard, international camps and section meetings ………….

AWARDS AND RESOURCES
THE GREEN FOOTPRINT AWARD
I mentioned in the October Edition of UP UP and AWAY about the Green Footprint Award, hopefully some of you have had a chance to have a look ……
In case you haven’t. I have been made aware that you can sign up as an individual (Leader, Scout or even Parent) as well as a patrol, section or group
Once registered, the Green Footprint Award website has a series of resources allowing all Sections to explore the effects of climate change, our own impact on the environment and learn about practical steps we can all take in our every day life.  These range from outline ideas to quizzes, Programmes on Line and background resource information   Even if you don't take up the challenge, I would strongly recommend signing up to get these resources.
The three stages of the award becoming increasingly challenging but the Bronze Award requires individuals/sections to complete a range of activities which spell out the words "CLIMATE CHANGE" (so you might look at Energy saving (E) or make some Cards from recycled material (C) or (M)). Once you have completed your challenges, you can print out a certificate.  With minimal effort, this would enable any Section to complete their Global
Challenge and provide a very good framework for an Environmental Partnership Award project.
More details of the award and how to register can be found on http://www.greenfootprintaward.org.uk.

PROGRAMME IDEAS
3rd December - Disability Awareness [B,C,S,E, N]
Introductory Activity
Get everyone to line up in order of their birthday/age/shoe size without making a noise.
Introduction
Discuss what "Scouts" think are disabilities - which disability do they think is the worst - why?  Explain that some disabilities are minor (e.g. short sighted) and can easily be corrected but some disabilities can affect a persons life forever.
Break into "Patrols" for challenge.  Patrols line up and each person in Patrol is given a disability (blindfolded (or weird coloured lenses), thumb taped to finger so it can't be used, one legged, headphones etc.).  Scouts line up and an everyday activity is called out (e.g. tie a reef knot) and Scouts have to do that activity with their "disability".
Alternatively give "Patrol" a challenge that has to be carried out using their disabilities (such as putting up a tent).
Don’t forget as mentioned ion OCTOBER 2008 edition of UP UP and AWAY
