Soccer Sixes

HMS Bristol Soccer Sixes 2007

Report by Paul Mills

Well Simon and I and the 7 lads , Joe ‘Obi’ Warner, Alex ’Swede’ Gooch, Josh ’Shadow’ Webster, Matthew ’Tunbridge’ Wells, Daniel ’Bamber’ Gascoigne, Ellis ’Bones’ McWilton and Jake ’Sid’ Mills set off to Portsmouth on a busy Friday evening.

We arrived at around 6.45pm registered the team, they went off to their mess and and Simon and I off for a quick beer, not before a ticking off from JJ for walking through colours, we thought it was someone whistling the dog opps.

Saturday morning and off we marched to breakfast then back to the ship to get changed and ready for the tournament. The referees did a warm up for all the boys and then it was down to business. The tournament was to be run in leagues with winners and runners up going through to the main league in the afternoon, then runner up and winners of that going through to semi final on Sunday.

First round of games in the morning put us up against teams

Leander

Watchet (Did we lose to these in the final last year on penalties? )

Durrington

Oulton Broad

Worthing

Results as follows morning league

Leander 0 – 4 3rd 5th

3rd 5th 3 – 0 Watchet

3rd 5th 3 – 0 Durrington

Oulton Broad 0 – 4 3rd 5th

Worthing 0 – 3 3rd 5th

So we won the league conceding zero goals and scoring 17.

The afternoon games saw us up against the following teams

Hamble

Torbay

Shoreham

Frodsham

Oulton Broad

The afternoon games were going to be tougher as these were the teams who had come through in 2nd or 3rd place in the other league pool.

Results followed

3rd 5th 4 – 0 Oulton Broad

Hamble 0 – 0 3rd 5th

Torbay 0 – 2 3rd 5th

Shoreham 0 – 0 3rd 5th

3rd 5th 1 – 1 Frodsham

The results speak for themselves and show that this was a tough afternoon of football, with the boys tiring and they themselves talking other teams up made it a difficult afternoon. However we were through to the Sunday morning semi finals.

Semi final was played against Streatham who like 3rd 5th had a good side however we managed to pull off the win with a golden goal in extra time to secure our place in the semi final.

The final turned out to be a district affair as we were to play 3rd Shoreham, a team who we just managed a draw against in the Saturday afternoon league. This game was going to be tough. However with both teams battling it out for the honours it was 3rd 5th who managed to score the only goal in the last couple of minutes of play, we then run the clock down by playing the ball in the corners. A great game with neither side deserving to loose but there can only be one winner.

Goal scorers

Joe Warner 13

Ellis McWilton 8

Daniel Gascoine 2

Alex Gooch 2

3rd Shoreham if you read this well done.
